General Dynamics Electric Boat was honored with the Special Industry Recognition Award by the Construction Institute during its annual awards program in Hartford on June 12. The award highlights Electric Boat’s exceptional commitment to workforce development across the region — a commitment that continues to grow as the company meets unprecedented demand for the nation’s nuclear‑powered submarine fleet.
In accepting the award on behalf of Electric Boat, Beth Rafferty, vice president for real estate and facilities, emphasized that meeting the Navy’s needs requires more than expanding buildings. It also means investing deeply in people, partnerships, and the communities that support EB’s mission. Rafferty highlighted several major initiatives, including completion of the Groton South Yard Assembly Building, groundbreaking on the new North Stonington warehouse, and the transformation of the former Crystal Mall property into a hub for engineering labs and hands-on training. The first phase of the Waterford project — a trades-training facility in the former Macy’s space — is designed to help new employees move quickly and safely from the classroom to the shipyard.
Rafferty also underscored the importance of EB’s growing network of education and workforce partners across the Northeast, including the University of Connecticut, University of Rhode Island, and public school systems engaged in the ANCHOR program. These collaborations strengthen pathways into high‑skilled, high‑demand careers and help ensure a strong, sustainable talent pipeline for the maritime industrial base.
The Construction Institute’s recognition reflects the collective efforts of EB employees, educators and community partners who are building opportunity across the region. “This award is meaningful because it reflects our shared commitment to building a stronger region together,” Rafferty said.
