Where skills take shape.

Outside Machinists install, align, troubleshoot, and maintain mechanical systems throughout the submarine. This includes pumps, valves, propulsion components, hydraulic systems, and auxiliary machinery that support submarine operations. Working in tight spaces and alongside multiple trades, Outside Machinists use precision tools and technical drawings to ensure every system is installed and operating to exact standards.

Inside Machinists manufacture and repair precision metal components used throughout the submarine. Using manual and CNC machines, they fabricate shafts, fittings, fasteners, and other critical parts that require extreme accuracy and consistency. This role demands strong math skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work from technical specifications to support submarine construction and maintenance.

Electricians install, test, troubleshoot, and maintain the complex electrical systems that power the submarine. From lighting and power distribution to advanced combat and navigation systems, Electricians ensure critical systems operate safely and reliably. The work requires reading blueprints, routing cable systems, connecting equipment, and performing system testing in a highly technical manufacturing environment.

Pipefitters install and assemble the piping systems that carry water, steam, hydraulic fluid, air, and other critical systems throughout the submarine. Using blueprints and precision measurements, they cut, bend, fit, and secure piping to exact specifications. Pipefitters work closely with welders and other trades to ensure systems meet strict safety and performance standards.

Welders join and fabricate metal components used in submarine construction using specialized welding techniques and equipment. Their work helps form the structural foundation of the submarine, requiring precision, consistency, and a commitment to quality. Welders work with various metals and must produce welds capable of meeting rigorous inspection and testing standards.

Shipfitters fabricate, assemble, and install the steel structures that form the submarine’s hull and internal framework. They read technical drawings, position structural components, and use various tools and equipment to ensure precise alignment and fit. Shipfitters play a critical role in turning raw steel into one of the most advanced submarines in the world.

At Electric Boat’s training centers in Groton and Quonset Point, hands-on learning meets real-world application. Explore the roles we teach below and find your next opportunity.

Carpenters support submarine construction and shipyard operations by building and installing staging, forms, temporary structures, and specialized work platforms used throughout the manufacturing process. They are responsible for applying special hull materials that keep the submarine stealthy and quiet. Carpenters are also tasked with moving various modules throughout the assembly process within the shipyard.

Painters prepare and cover submarine surfaces using specialized industrial paints and protective coatings designed to withstand harsh marine environments. Responsibilities include surface preparation, pressure washing, sanding, mirror painting, abrasive blasting, inspection and applying coatings to ensure durability, corrosion prevention, and quality appearance standards throughout the vessel.

Pipe Lagging technicians install insulation systems on piping, ventilation, and mechanical systems throughout the submarine. Their work helps regulate temperature, reduce noise, and improve system efficiency while meeting strict safety and performance standards. This role requires precision cutting, fitting, and securing insulation materials in confined and technical workspaces.

Sheet Metal Fabricators manufacture and install ventilation systems, enclosures, structural components, and custom metal parts used throughout the submarine. Using blueprints, fabrication equipment, and forming tools, they cut, shape, and assemble metal components to exact specifications required for submarine construction.

Rigging, Lifting, and Handling teams move and position a variety of submarine components safely and precisely throughout the shipyard. Using cranes, hoists, slings, and specialized lifting equipment, riggers support nearly every stage of submarine construction. This role requires strong spatial awareness, teamwork, and a deep understanding of load handling and safety procedures.

Pipe Welders perform highly specialized welding on submarine piping systems that support critical onboard operations. Using advanced welding processes such as GTAW/TIG welding, Pipe Welders join pipe systems to exact tolerances while meeting rigorous inspection and radiographic testing requirements. Their work is essential to ensuring system integrity and long-term submarine performance.
