Youth Programs.
From First Look to Future Career.
Big futures often begin with small moments—a question asked, a challenge accepted, or a new possibility explored. Electric Boat’s youth programs introduce elementary, middle, and high school students to maritime careers, skilled trades, engineering, and the technologies that support the future of submarine construction.
- Boat for Kids
This six-week program introduces students in grades 4 and 5 to the exciting world of shipbuilding through hands-on learning and interactive activities. Meeting once a week during or after school, participants explore the six core maritime trades while hearing directly from professionals working throughout the shipbuilding industry. Through projects such as building PVC pipe periscopes and aluminum foil submarines, students gain an early understanding of the skills, teamwork, and innovation behind modern shipbuilding.
- Boat for Explorers
Designed for students in grades 7 and 8, this program introduces the maritime industry through hands-on engineering and project-based learning. Students work together to build and operate a SeaPerch remotely operated vehicle (ROV) while learning to use common industry tools, including PVC cutters, soldering irons, drills, and electrical wiring. Along the way, they strengthen problem-solving skills and experience the fundamentals of teamwork and project management. The curriculum is developed and reviewed by subject matter experts and aligned with science education standards.
- Boat for Next Gen
Students in grades 9 through 12 explore the six core maritime manufacturing trades through immersive, hands-on learning experiences. In each session, students learn about associated career opportunities and the skills needed to succeed in the industry. Students are provided personal protective equipment (PPE) and operate industry equipment used in the six core trades, allowing them to experience the trades in a safe, supportive learning environment and discover where a future in shipbuilding could begin.
- Summer High School Internship Program (SHIP)
The Summer High School Internship Program (SHIP) is a paid, work-based learning opportunity that gives rising high school seniors real workplace experience and helps prepare them for future careers in manufacturing, the skilled trades, and design.
- Rhode Island High School Co-Op Program
This high school senior-year career exploration program is offered through partner high schools for students who participated in SHIP the previous summer and are looking to pursue a career in drafting or manufacturing at our Rhode Island Quonset Point or Connecticut locations.
Adult Training.

Through our workforce training partnerships in Connecticut and Rhode Island, eligible new hires receive hands-on training in the skilled trades and design after accepting an Electric Boat job offer. You’ll learn from experienced professionals and build the foundation for a lasting career working on some of the world’s most advanced submarines.
