On August 21, Electric Boat and the New England Institute of Technology (NEIT) celebrated a major milestone in their long‑standing workforce development partnership with the groundbreaking of the new Shipbuilding Advanced Institute for Learning (SAIL) Rhode Island Campus.
The SAIL Campus marks a significant investment in the skilled talent required to build the submarines essential to our national defense. As part of this expansion, NEIT’s Post Road campus will grow from 30,000 square feet to 100,000 square feet, transforming it into Electric Boat’s primary workforce training center in Rhode Island.
Once complete, the facility will have the capacity to train approximately 3,000 new Electric Boat employees each year. The expanded campus will feature more than 20 classrooms designed to deliver hands-on instruction across critical trades, including welding, shipfitting, pipefitting, machining, sheet metal, paint, and electrical.
The demand for submarines continues to rise—along with the need for a highly trained workforce capable of building them. Strengthening and expanding accessible pathways into shipbuilding careers is essential, and SAIL represents a major step forward. The new campus will equip thousands of future shipbuilders with the skills and training necessary to launch meaningful careers at Electric Boat while bolstering Rhode Island’s shipbuilding workforce for years to come.
The groundbreaking of SAIL is more than a construction milestone; it is an investment in people, in mission, and in the future of submarine shipbuilding.
