Which jobs provide training?
Training opportunities vary by position. Many entry-level skilled trades and manufacturing roles provide pre-employment training and on-the-job training to help employees develop the skills needed for success. Some positions may require prior experience, certifications or experience.
Do I need a degree?
Not always. Educational requirements vary by position. Some roles, such as Engineering and certain professional positions, require a college degree or specific certifications. Many skilled trades, manufacturing, and entry-level positions only require a high school diploma or GED. Review the qualifications listed in the job posting to determine the requirements for a specific role.
Do I need prior shipbuilding experience?
Not always. Many of our positions provide training and are designed for candidates with transferable skills or no prior shipbuilding experience. Job requirements vary by position, so we encourage you to review the qualifications in each job posting.
What is the Boat Program?

Why do I need a background check?
As a defense contractor, Electric Boat conducts background screenings as part of the employment process to help ensure compliance with customer, regulatory, and security requirements.
How long does the background check take?
Background check timelines can vary depending on individual circumstances, security clearance, and verification requirements. Some screenings may be completed quickly while others my take additional time.
Do I need a security clearance?
Yes. All Electric Boat employees are required to obtain and maintain a security clearance as condition of employment. The type and level of clearance required caries depending on the position and job responsibilities. Candidates selected for employment will receive additional information about the clearance process and any requirements associated with their role.
Pay and Benefits
What is the starting pay?
In Connecticut, our starting pay for entry-level trades roles is $24.28/hr. In Rhode Island, our starting pay for entry-level trades positions is $24/hr.

What support is available for transitioning service members?
Transitioning service members receive strong support at Electric Boat. We participate in the DoD SkillBridge program, which allows service members to complete a civilian internship with us before separation. Our recruiting team is very familiar with military backgrounds, and we partner with Oplign to help you match your MOS/Rating to EB opportunities. Many of our leaders and employees are veterans themselves, so the environment is very supportive of military experience.
High School and Early Career
Can high school seniors apply?
Yes! Electric Boat provides opportunities for graduating high school seniors who are ready to begin a career in shipbuilding, manufacturing, or design. We encourage students to attend EB information sessions hosted at their schools and connect with us at career fairs. Seniors are welcome—and encouraged—to apply before graduation. Experience is not necessary, we provide training.
Are high school internships available?
Yes! Electric Boat offers SHIP our Summer High School Intern Program to students between their junior and senior year. This is an 8-week paid internship in Groton, CT and Quonset Point, RI open to students in comprehensive and technical high schools. Internships are available in design and shipyard operations. Yes! Electric Boat offers a robust summer internship program for college students interested in engineering and business support fields such as finance, human resources, workforce development, and more. Each summer, more than 300 interns join EB to gain hands-on experience, contribute to meaningful projects, and explore career paths within the shipbuilding industry. What college co-op opportunities does EB offer?
General Dynamics Electric Boat offers full-time engineering co‑op opportunities for college students.
These structured 4‑to‑6‑month programs allow students who have completed at least one year in a STEM major to replace an academic term with hands-on experience supporting the Virginia- and Columbia-class submarine programs. Co-ops run in the spring and fall semester and are based out of Groton, New London, and North Stonington, CT, as well as North Kingstown and Newport, RI.
